Riviera Maya refers to the entire area south of Cancun Mexico, in the Quintana Roo region. … Tulum/Akumal- These towns are near each other in the southern part of the Riviera Maya. They are about 1.5 to 2 hours from Cancun and are the home to many beautiful ruins and beaches.
The Peninsula itself is home to the Mexican nations of Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. It also covers the northern parts of Belize and Guatemala.
The Yucatan Peninsula includes 3 Mexican States. Quintana Roo, (eastern coast state facing the Caribbean Sea) offers a great beach vacation and is famous for its Maya Riviera where Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and many beach resorts are located. I prefer the region around the towns of Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.
I have actually driven all the way to the Belize Border. It took 4 1/2 hours to get there from Playa Del Carmen.
We stayed in a beautiful Cabin at Rancho Encantado
