We recently visited our favourite area in the Mayan Riviera, of Mexico. I found the beaches to be covered in seaweed! What a horrible sight. As It turns out the whole area of the Caribbean has this problem. Where did it all come from?
It’s actually called “Sargassum Seaweed“
Barbados hit hard
Florida Beach
What is the cause of all this Sargassum seaweed?
Several factors could explain the proliferation of Sargassum in the area and in recent years. These include the rise of sea temperature and the change of sea currents due to climate change. Also, nutrients from agricultural fertilizers and wastewater from the cities that end up in the sea could also make the algae bloom for instance.
I noticed that the water was not as clear as in the previous years that I visited. Even in that area of Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
As a result of the continued presence of sargassum seaweed on the beaches of Mexico continues to be a concern to many travellers.
